The pancreas is a 6-inch long organ located behind the stomach in the back of the abdomen. It shaped like a fish, extended horizontally across the abdomen. The head of the pancreas is on the right side of the abdomen where the stomach is attached to the first part of the small intestine while the tail of the pancreas its narrowest part that extends to the left side of the abdomen next to the spleen.

Pancreatic tumor occurs when the uncontrolled cell growth begins in the pancreas. Other than that, rather developing into healthy, normal pancreas tissue, these abnormal cells continue dividing and form lumps or masses of tissue called tumors. Tumors then interfere with the main functions of the pancreas.

Pancreatic tumor has two types that is exocrine and endocrine tumor. But tumors formed by the exocrine cells are much more common.

• Exocrine Tumor

Exocrine Tumors is a special type of tumor can start where the bile duct (from the liver) and the pancreatic duct empty into the small intestine. This type of tumor often causes signs such as yellowing of the skin and eyes.

• Endocrine Tumor

Endocrine tumors are much less common. They are known as islet cell tumors or neuroendocrine tumors and are divided into several sub-types.

PANCREATIC TUMOR

A risk factor is anything that affects chance of getting a disease such as tumor. Different tumor has different risk factor. But having a risk factor, or even several risk is not mean will get the disease. There are some factors which can increase the risk of acquiring the genetic mutations that may potentially result in pancreatic tumors.

• Cigarette smoking

Cigarette smoke contains a large number of carcinogens (chemical). Therefore, it is not surprising that cigarette smoking is one of the biggest risk factor for developing pancreatic tumor.

• Age

The risk of developing pancreatic tumor increases with age. Most of the cases develop between the ages of 60 and 80.

• Race

Pancreatic tumor is more common in the African-American population than is in the white population.

• Gender

Usually pancreatic tumor is more common in the men than in women. This is because men are more likely to smoke than women.

• Chronic pancreatitis

The long-term inflammation of the pancreas has been linked to tumor of the pancreas.

• Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce adequate amount of insulin. Insulin is a hormone normally made by the pancreas. Diabetes appears to be both a symptom of pancreatic tumor, and long-standing adult-onset diabetes may also increase the risk of developing pancreatic tumor.

• Peptic ulcer surgery

Patient who had a portion of their stomach removed (partial gastrectomy) appear to have an increased risk for developing pancreatic tumor.

• Diet

Diets high in meats, cholesterol fried foods and nitrosamines may increase the risk, while diets high in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of pancreatic tumor.
